The Quiet Craft of Joinery
Shaped by Hand,
Built to Last

From the Gatewick Lane workshop in Caldecotte, Milton Keynes, TGH CARPENTRY LTD turns seasoned oak, walnut and ash into furniture, staircases and timber frames that carry the makers mark for generations. Every board is chosen by eye, every joint cut by hand, every finish applied with patience.

The Trades

Six Trades, One Bench

Each service below draws on the same foundations: honest timber, dry joints cut dead-square, and a stubborn dislike of shortcuts. Follow the dovetails to the desk, the mortise and tenon to the frame, the mitre to the cornice.

Bespoke Joinery and Fitted Furniture

Hand-built bookcases, media walls, home offices and breakfast nooks that follow the exact line of your room, not a catalogue drawing. We match existing mouldings, respond to unusual alcoves, and build in solid grown timber rather than laminated board.

Kitchen and Wardrobe Fitting

From freestanding larder units to floor-to-ceiling fitted wardrobes, we install carcases dead level, hang doors that close on their own, and tune every drawer slide until the action feels banked and smooth.

Staircases and Balustrades

Newel posts, handrails and spindle balustrades cut and fitted on site, matched to the character of your period home or set crisp against modern minimalism. We build loft staircases with storage treads to save every inch of floor space.

Timber Frame and Structural Work

Sheds, garden rooms, internal oak frames and structural stud walls, engineered for the loads they bear and dressed to show their members off. Green timber and seasoned oak alike are handled on ventilated cradles until they settle square.

Floor and Deck Installation

Oiled oak floors laid whisper-flat on a levelled subfloor, and timber decks raised clear of the ground on guaranteed bearers. We design for movement, ventilation and a grain pattern laid out before a single board is dropped.

Restoration and Repairs

We give aged sash windows, wormed boards and sagging doors a second life. Loose joints are re-pinned dry, rotten ends are cut back and spliced with the same species, and original ironmongery is kept wherever it still bites.

Our Process

From Rough Board to Finished Piece

Every commission follows the same disciplined route through the Caldecotte workshop. Nothing is skipped, nothing is rushed to catch a deadline that matters less than the joint.

01

Meet and Measure

We visit your space, take photographs, note the light and the mouldings, and talk through how you actually live in the room. Then we measure twice.

02

Draw and Quote

You receive a clear set of drawings with honest material choices and a fixed quotation. We explain the grain, the finish and the time involved.

03

Cut and Assemble

Timber is selected, stickered and seasoned as needed. Joints are cut by hand and trial-assembled dry before a single drop of adhesive goes near them.

04

Finish and Fit

We sand to a whisper, oil or varnish in thin coats, and fit on site with protective board. We leave when it is perfect, not when it is simply done.

Why the Workshop

The Standard We Hold Ourselves To

Dry Joints

Joinery First

Furniture should be held together by its joints and the honest glue of grain against grain, not by a mountain of metal brackets. We cut dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, and bridle joints by hand, trial each one, and only glue a joint that fits without persuasion. Screws are reserved for the carcass back where no one will ever see them, and even those are countersunk and plugged with oak.

Seasoned Timber

The Right Wood

We buy from British mills where possible and sticker every board on site to let it acclimatise to the humidity of your home before it becomes part of your furniture. A kitchen door fitted in summer should not pinch in winter. Understanding movement is half the craft, and we price for it honestly rather than letting your cabinetry quietly warp.

Site Respect

Clean as We Go

A joiners shop without discipline is a fire hazard and a tripping trap. We sheet your floors, run dust extraction on site, and sweep at the end of every day. Digging your new oak floor back out from under a layer of dust would embarrass us, so it simply does not happen. We leave the room cleaner than we found it.

Makers Guarantee

Backed for Years

Every commission from TGH CARPENTRY LTD carries a full workmanship guarantee, because we believe a crafted piece should outlive the invoice by decades. If a joint opens or a finish dulls before its time, we return and put it right at no charge to you. That promise costs us nothing to make, because we build to keep it.
